Starting a ketogenic diet

Actually, I already started it Monday. I’m not following anybody’s diet (like Atkins, Rosedale, etc) - just limiting my intake of carbs to 50g per day.

My starting point = 262#; at 6’0” height, that puts my BMI just over 35. My weight has gone as high as 274# recently and I am borderline on a lot of health factors, so I think it’s pretty much now or never.

I’ve tried to lose weight before and counting calories or sticking religiously to somebody else’s plan doesn’t last very long for me. So, I don’t count calories or carbs - I’m just avoiding as many carbs as possible and trying to stay under 25g of “known” carbs. I know that additional carbs seem to have a way of sneaking into foods, so staying under 25g gives me a 25g cushion of “hidden” carbs.

So far, I’m sticking to it; I snack mostly on string cheese and nuts - except cashews and pistachios - who knew they had so many carbs (compared to the rest of the nuts)? I drink ice water and black coffee almost exclusively. I’ve had chinese food a few times, but without the rice/noodles and steering clear of the breaded stuff (like sweet & sour). I know the sauce has hidden carbs, but from what I’ve been able to determine, no more than about 10g.

I feel mostly ok, but a little run down. One good thing I’ve noticed so far = I don’t really feel hungry any more (vs all the time). I don’t think I’ll weigh myself again until I start ketosis - maybe this weekend. The hardest part = everywhere I look … carbs; before now, I must have been consuming hundreds of grams of carbs every day, over 300g in soft drinks alone.
