#The Bourne Legacy #Trailer
“Twitter is where news breaks; Facebook is where news goes. This is something that members of the media, who live on Twitter and regard Facebook with removed interest, take for granted. The coverage of and discussion about Facebook’s IPO may have been the clearest demonstration yet of one of the few things the service can’t seem to do: Lead the conversation.” —BuzzFeed’s John Herrman • Making a wise point about how the Facebook IPO was really a much bigger story on Twitter than Facebook. Part of that, to us, is due to the way the networks work. “The site, as is, is great at building after-the-fact, heavily filtered digests,” Hermann explains, “While Tweets are like free-roaming units of information, Facebook posts live in the context of each users’ friend bubble.” We noticed the same trend when the IPO broke. And it is very telling — a level of engagement FB could never hope to have, even if it’s with a smaller audience. (via shortformblog)

“Suits and ties in an office are just another type of uniform, but in an arena where uniforms no longer serve any useful purpose. At one time they probably showed that the wearer was, at the very least, able to purchase and maintain a fairly expensive piece of fabric. Now, however, in an individualized, interconnected culture, your achievements speak for themselves. The suit and tie is an anachronism.” —Richard Branson (via learnfromothers)

“It’s important to realize that no matter what crazy thought that enters your head, there’s now a minor media outlet out there willing to tell you that you are right…And we get trapped in the sort of reality dysmorphia, this idea that we can just view what it is that we want to see in the world without that actually being attached to reality.” —Clay Johnson on a healthier “Information Diet” (via newshour)

Managing Lion's "Resume" feature → osxdaily.com

had to deal with this recently. in Lion, when you restart the machine, all of the APPS (not windows) that were up when you shut down are restarted (as a “convenience” to you). I emphasized APPS since you may have the Mail window closed but if the app is still running (triangle below the dock icon), then Mail (and its window) will reopen on restart. This wouldn’t be so bad if the apps all started up minimized (app starts, but no window), but this is not the case. There are a few options:

  • go back to Snow Leopard
  • remember to uncheck the option to open all of the windows in the shutdown dialog box
  • use sys prefs to permanently disable this option (although some have reported that this does not work the way you expect)
  • use a terminal command to permanently disable the option
  • try one of many apps that help you do this
  • (there are other options as well)

for option 5, the best app i have found is (free) Resuminator by Erica Sadun, a respected developer and author of an excellent book: The iOS 5 Developer’s Cookbook.

iMore: The 4 inch iPhone → imore.com

streakmachine:

With all the talk about a, still theoretical, 4-inch screen adorned iPhone lately It’s not surprising to see some very in-depth articles about how Apple might go about making such a device. Rene Ritchie has done just that and it’s a very good article, covering all the options.

Do check out my own article on the topic from January this year, which is not as long nor does it contain any mockups of 4-inch iPhones, compared to Ritchie’s excellent article.

[Via: Daring Fireball]

Nice article laying out the options. Personally, I’d like to see the aspect ratio move to 16:9 with a slightly longer case — about 1/2” taller would be about right; but definitely not wider or thicker.

MIT study suggests that at low dose-rate, radiation poses little risk to DNA → web.mit.edu

This is interesting; I saw a show on PBS Nature a few weeks ago about the wolves (and other animals) in the Chernobyl zone that suggests something similar. I don’t know when it will be on again, but you can watch it on the free PBS for iPad app.

Harry McCracken: Fact-Checking Digitimes, the Taiwanese Apple Rumor Source That Keeps Crying ‘Wolf!’ → techland.time.com

streakmachine:

Harry McCracken has done a great job assembling a wonderful tear-down of DigiTimes and their accuracy regarding Apple rumors. Do go read McCracken’s article and get yourself a good idea about what we are dealing with.

I’ve been saying it for almost as long as I have been running this site and I’ll most likely continue saying it well into the future: When you see DigiTimes mentioned in an article about a future Apple product, close the tab and move on!

“As an atheist, I see nothing “wrong” in believing in a God. I don’t think there is a God, but belief in him does no harm. If it helps you in any way, then that’s fine with me. It’s when belief starts infringing on other people’s rights when it worries me. I would never deny your right to believe in a God. I would just rather you didn’t kill people who believe in a different God, say. Or stone someone to death because your rulebook says their sexuality is immoral. It’s strange that anyone who believes that an all-powerful all-knowing, omniscient power responsible for everything that happens, would also want to judge and punish people for what they are.” —

Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adapter → amazon.com

Well, it looks like Seagate finally delivered on its promise to come out with a Thunderbolt adapter for its GoFlex drives (portables only for now - desktop drives later this year). It’s a bit pricey = $100 plus $50 for the Thunderbolt cable (not included) — $190 plus for the desktop version.

Apparently, the exposed connector is a SATA connector, so you can hook up a bare SATA drive (or SSD !) to the adapter.

Unfortunately, there seem to be some issues with Mac compatibility that still have to be worked out. Since it only appears to be 2x the speed of the Firewire 800 adapter (the one I’m using), I think I’ll wait for the reported issues to get worked out.
